Penmachno Equestrian Project

Penmachno ProjectIn November 2003, a small group of riders from the Penmachno area ,in then Upper Conwy Valley,  became involved in a project to bring tourists and business into our community. Over recent years Penmachno has seen a decline in public facilities and a lack of economic growth, which has resulted in social isolation for many sections of the community. By  providing facilities which outside groups will want to utilize, we hope to encourage more people to come into the village of Penmachno .

Horse riding is becoming an ever increasingly popular outdoor activity. Trail riding has become popular on the continent and  many new trails have been set up all around Great Britain.

We have received funding for the first phase of our project which is to build an Arena in the forest above Penmachno. This will be free to the public and we will be holding events to raise money for maintenance on a regular basis. Forest Enterprise is backing our project and has agreed to a site for the arena  and also the possibility of Canter Rides in the Forest above Penmachno. At present there is no schooling arena  within a radius of 24 miles and those outside that boundary are privately owned. We are also looking into opening up more forest trails and connecting routes to the rest of Snowdonia. The route between Ysbyty Ifan and Penmachno is now open to horseriders again after it became unpassable in places several years ago. This route offers some of the best views across the Snowdonia Mountain range.

One aim of the project is to bring horse riders from other areas and to create the opportunity for local farmers to diversify into offering Bed/Breakfast accommodation and stabling for riders. We also hope that eventually, the increase in day visitors will enable a community shop project to go ahead.  We intend for the schooling area to be used by the Pony Club who at present have no facilities in the Upper Conwy valley. Many local children who own ponies in this area have to travel over 20 miles to their nearest Pony Club branch.

Research we have done suggests that these facilities will be widely welcomed by the riding fraternity within the Conway Valley and further a field, as safe, enjoyable routes are becoming few and far between.
